Dental Extractions

In certain cases, it may be necessary for a tooth to be extracted. This may occur if a baby tooth has an irregular shape or long roots that hinder it from naturally falling out and making room for the permanent tooth. Alternatively, a tooth may have too much decay to protect the surrounding teeth and jaw from harm. Orthodontic issues, infection, or problems with a wisdom tooth may also necessitate tooth removal.

If it is determined that your child’s tooth must be taken out, your pediatric dentist may extract it during a regular checkup or may schedule a separate appointment. The process of extracting a tooth involves expanding the socket and separating the tooth from the ligament that keeps it in the socket. While this is generally a quick procedure, it is important to tell your dentist about any preferences or worries you may have regarding sedation in order to ensure that your child feels as comfortable as possible.
