Dental Cleanings

Here at Happy Kids Dental, we understand the importance of keeping your child’s teeth healthy and clean. Dental cleanings certainly aren’t simply for adults. We recommend that children undergo this important preventive oral procedure regularly. We call it preventive because a dental cleaning, which includes a thorough oral examination, allows our dental team to observe the overall health of a child’s mouth and find any possible cavities or dental ailments before they worsen. The dental staff at Happy Kids Dental specialize in providing the highest level of comfort for every child throughout the teeth cleaning process.

Before the exam begins, our dental hygienist will first discuss what the dental cleaning process is followed by a demonstration of the procedure. Once your child has an understanding of what will take place, the dentist proceeds with the teeth cleaning process.

Our staff will inspect the health of the teeth and gums. The dental hygienist typically begins with a tooth scraper to remove plaque from the teeth. This important step helps fight bacteria, keeping the gums and teeth protected. She will also brush and floss your child’s teeth thoroughly to remove any excess plaque.

Once the cleaning is completed, we will provide age-appropriate instructions to the parents and child to help maintain their teeth properly with regular brushing and flossing.

Regular cleanings by our staff at least once every six (6) months definitely has its benefits. In addition to having clean teeth and gums, a routine of professional teeth cleaning can also help with your little one’s overall health.

What’s involved in professional teeth cleaning?

During your child’s visit to Happy Kid’s Dental, we’ll:

  • Remove the calculus (not the math, but hardened plaque that clings to the enamel of your teeth and can be removed only by specialized dental instruments);
  • Get rid of the other sticky plaque formed on the teeth that serves as a breeding ground for living bacteria;
  • Polish your child’s teeth to remove stains
  • Go over instruction of effective oral hygiene with your child.

Why should my child have his teeth cleaned every six months?

Children should have their teeth cleaned every six months because a thorough cleaning exam will warn you of any impending issues that can be addressed early.  During your child’s teeth cleaning appointment, our dental staff can look for signs of other potential problems – cavities, receding gums, or other medical problems – and get an early start on correcting them.

Is there a link between healthy teeth and overall health?

There sure is! There’s a lot of truth to the saying that your oral health reflects your overall health. New research tells us that if your oral health is poor, there may also be other health problems. For example, bad breath and bleeding gums can be a signal of diabetes, while gum disease can be a sign of cardiovascular (heart) troubles. When you consider that over 90% of conditions that negatively impact our bodies have oral symptoms, the link between oral health and overall health is easy to see.
